Jose Valle Fajardo “Chuscales” grew up in a traditional gypsy family of musicians and dancers in Antequera, Spain. His grandmother lived in the caves of Sacromonte, one of the legendary cradles of flamenco. Chuscales recalls, "It's something we learn through life," he says. "A lot of people don't have my luck to grow up in the caves, learning flamenco in a Gypsy family where the music is passed down by tradition, from legend to legend, legend to child. I am grateful to have been around such great musicians and dancers all my life.” Chuscales began guitar lessons at age six under the instruction of his uncle Joaquín Fajardo and maestro Agustinillo. As a teen, Chuscales found himself frequently in the company of the late flamenco icon, Paco de Lucía, who took notice of the talented youngster. Meanwhile, he began his performing career as a dancer, a lesson in rhythmic nuances that would deeply inform his guitar playing.
He continues to be the most sought after Flamenco artist in the country and tours year round. Chuscales has dedicated himself to passing down this oral tradition through formal and informal teaching. He has worked as a lecturer and instructor at the University of New Mexico and Dartmouth College. He has recorded over four albums including “Encuentros del Alma” and “Gypsy Soul” and has recorded music for major motion pictures such as “Gypsy Heart” and “El Payo” that have both won prestigious awards.
